Badrinath is a special place known for the sacred Badrinath Temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu. It's part of the Char Dham and Chota Char Dham pilgrimage yatras. Badrinath is located in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand, on the Garhwal hill tracks near the Alaknanda River.
The temple is set against the stunning Nar and Narayan mountain ranges and the mighty Neelkanth mountain, making it a beautiful spot. It stands tall at an elevation of 10,279 feet. Legend has it that Adi Shankaracharya established the temple. Inside, there's a 1-meter tall black stone idol of Lord Vishnu, considered one of the 8 self-manifested statues of Vishnu in India.
The temple remains closed from November to April each year due to extreme weather. It reopens on the auspicious day of Akshaya Tritiya in April. During closure, a special lamp called Akhanda Jyoti is lit, lasting for six months. The temple's image is temporarily moved to Narasimha temple at Jyotirmath.
Badrinath Temple has a unique hot sulphur spring called Tapt Kund, believed to have medicinal properties. The Alaknanda River originates from here. The Mata Murti Ka Mela and the Badri Kedar Festival are additional reasons to visit this ancient and spiritually significant place.
